Color Catch · Memory Chess

How the game works, and how to reach a human.

Color Catch is a memory game with a wooden round board. Colored pegs are shown for a few seconds, then they all turn face-down. Roll the die, it lands on a color, and tap the peg you think is that color. Play against the computer, or pass one iPhone or iPad around for two or three players. It is free to download and play, works offline, has no ads, and needs no account. One optional purchase unlocks the bigger boards, Owl and 3 players.

How to play in five steps

  1. Pick a mode. On the home screen choose Play vs Computer, 2 Players, or 3 Players. The board-size chip remembers your last choice.
  2. Look and remember. Every peg shows its color for a few seconds while a ring counts down, then the pegs flip face-down.
  3. Roll the die. Tap the wooden die. It tumbles and lands on one color. The die only shows colors still on the board, so the game always ends.
  4. Tap a peg. A match flies into your tray and scores a point. A miss shows the peg's color for a moment, so everyone learns from it, then it flips back.
  5. Empty the board. Most pegs in the tray wins. Then tap Rematch, or go back home.

With the "Bonus turn on a match" rule switched on (the default, as in the original rulebook), you keep rolling while you keep matching.

Questions

How do I turn the sound off?

Tap the speaker button on the home screen, or open the gear icon and switch "Sound" off. The game never plays anything on launch, and the sounds are only a soft tick on a flip and a chime on a match. Your choice is remembered.

I'm color-blind, or my child mixes up the colors. Can the pegs show something other than color?

Yes. Open the gear icon and switch on "Shapes on pegs". Each color then carries its own shape — circle, triangle, square, star, heart, diamond — on the peg cap and on the die face, so you can play by shape alone. The six colors are the Okabe-Ito palette, chosen to stay distinguishable under all common types of color blindness. If you have "Differentiate Without Color" switched on in iOS Accessibility settings, shapes turn on by themselves.

How do the three computer opponents differ?

They differ in how much of the board they remember and how fast they forget it.

BunnyForgets a lot, and tracks only a few pegs. Good for little players.
FoxRemembers about half the board. A fair match for most people.
OwlRemembers nearly everything and rarely slips. You will have to concentrate.

All three sometimes slip to a neighbouring peg, the way a person does. Choose the tier under "Computer" in settings.

Can I reset my settings or restore my stats?

Everything the game remembers — settings, avatars, board size, difficulty and game records — is stored only on your device, so there is nothing to restore from a server and no account to sign back into. Deleting the app clears all of it, and reinstalling starts you fresh with the defaults. Detailed stats such as wins per tier and streaks are planned for a later update.

Does it need the internet?

No. Color Catch plays entirely on your device, on a plane or anywhere else. Online play between devices may come in a future update.

Are there ads or purchases?

No ads, ever. Since version 1.2 the Small and Classic boards, Bunny and Fox, and 2-player games are free, and one optional in-app purchase (Unlock everything) adds the Big and Huge boards, Owl, 3 players and anything added later. There is also an optional tip jar in Settings; tips unlock nothing. Every purchase asks a quick grown-ups-only math question first, and payments are handled by Apple — the app still collects no data.

I had the app before 1.2. Do I have to pay?

No. If you first downloaded Color Catch (or Peg Recall) before version 1.2, everything stays unlocked for you, automatically. If it ever doesn't, open Settings → Unlock everything → Restore purchase, or write to us.

I bought the unlock on another device.

Open Settings → Unlock everything → Restore purchase, signed in with the same Apple Account.
