Answers to common questions about Sankhya. Your practice data lives only on your iPhone — most of these questions are about keeping it safe.
Your data
How do automatic backups work?
Every day, the first time you open Sankhya, it writes a snapshot of your practice to a Backups folder inside the app's own storage. It also saves a snapshot before any app update, before a restore, and whenever you complete a purashcharana. These are kept automatically — the last 14 daily snapshots, the last 12 monthly ones, and every event snapshot, forever.
You can see them any time in the iOS Files app under On My iPhone → Sankhya → Backups.
How do I save a backup to iCloud Drive?
- Open Sankhya and go to Settings → Your Data → Save backup to Files / iCloud Drive.
- The share sheet opens with your backup file ready to send.
- Choose Save to Files, then pick iCloud Drive (or any folder you like).
You can also AirDrop the file to a Mac, or email it to yourself, from the same share sheet. Do this now and then — a gentle reminder appears on your Progress screen if it has been a while.
How do I restore from a backup?
- Go to Settings → Your Data → Restore from backup.
- Pick one of the automatic backups listed, or choose a file you saved yourself.
- Sankhya shows a preview of what's in that backup — mantra (or your private label), total japa, sankalpa date, last entry date — before anything changes.
- Confirm, and your practice is restored. Your current data is snapshotted first, so nothing is lost in the process.
How do I move to a new iPhone?
If you set up your new iPhone from an iCloud or Finder/computer backup of your old one, Sankhya's data moves across automatically — nothing to do.
If you set up as new, or switch from a backup that didn't include the app: install Sankhya, then go to Settings → Restore from backup and choose a backup file you saved to iCloud Drive, email, or another location. This is exactly why we recommend saving an off-phone backup now and then, in addition to the automatic on-phone ones.
What happens if I delete the app?
Deleting Sankhya removes everything stored inside it, including the automatic backups in its Backups folder — the same way deleting any app removes its own files. A backup you saved outside the app (to iCloud Drive, email, AirDrop, and so on) is completely unaffected and can be used to restore your practice if you reinstall.
This is the one case the automatic on-phone backups can't cover, which is why Sankhya also gives you a one-tap way to save a copy off the phone.
Using Sankhya
Can I export a PDF of my progress?
Yes, and it's always free. Go to Settings → Download progress as PDF, or use the button on your completion screen. You can choose the date range, whether to include the full daily log, and whether to hide your mantra name (hidden automatically if you chose a private label). The PDF includes your totals, a monthly table, a year heatmap, and your dashamsha status — a record you can print, save, or share.
How do reminders work?
You can set a morning reminder time during your sankalpa, and an optional evening reminder that only appears if that day's target hasn't been met yet. These are ordinary local notifications on your phone — they never contain your mantra, and nothing about them leaves your device. Set or change them any time in Settings → Practice.
What does "credit per mala" mean?
A physical mala has 108 beads, but tradition commonly counts one full round as 100 japa toward your target — the remaining 8 are considered an offering to the guru, covering any errors in counting. Some practitioners count all 108. Sankhya asks you to choose, 100 or 108, when you take your sankalpa, and locks that choice for the whole purashcharana so your target and estimated completion date never shift mid-journey. Either way, the counting screen always tracks a full 108-bead round — only how much of it counts toward your target differs.
What is the "new day begins at" setting?
If you practice late at night — after midnight, during Brahmamuhurta, or on an irregular schedule — this setting decides which calendar day that practice counts toward. By default a new day starts at 12:00 AM, but you can move it to 1, 2, 3, or 4 AM in Settings → Practice, so a 2 AM session before dawn still counts toward the day you meant it for.
